Give This Report Card to Your Operators and See the Result

There are many sewing operators who are working for more than 20 years in the same garment factory.  Possibly they have spent a long-time making garments in different factories.

They might have stitched millions of garments since their first job as a sewing operator.

Today they might not have any record or proof of their work and their contribution to the fashion manufacturing industry.

Let’s imagine –
- if they had a report card showing the record of total garments they have made since the start of their sewing career;
- if they have a list of different garment items they have made;
- if they get the record of all brands for whom they stitched garments
- if they get to know their performance month by month and year after year.

It will be simply a great thing to have.

It is true that there is no practice of giving a performance report card to garment factory workers when someone leaves the company. They do not get a certificate of their good or excellent performance in the company as a sewing operator. If operators had it, they could carry it for the new job interview. They can keep it as their achievements certificate.

RMG companies can give a printed report card to their workers. The report card can be given when an employee part away from the company. It can be given at end of each month or once a year if the employees continue working with the same company.

We know sewing operators and other shop floor workers are key resources for running a garment manufacturing business. They sew garments and add value to the product. That is what we export to brands.

A performance report card will improve employee’s morale. A report card (progress report) will motivate most of the employees. This single action can improve a company’s image in the garment manufacturing cluster. If someone receives this report card when she leaves your company, she can show her performance to another company where she will join. This will help the second company in its hiring process.

At this moment we do not know how this small act will bring changes in this industry. At least this act will give recognition to the operators.

And this act will motivate workers to work better in the following months. I am sure, this act will have a bigger impact on the whole manufacturing industry.

Doing something the first time that we have never done before makes us uncomfortable.

In another aspect, giving a performance report card to operators can change the view of the workers (sewing operator, tailors, helpers, quality checkers) about the garment manufacturing industry. Employees will love working in the readymade garment manufacturing factories.

Many professionals love to share their achievements on social media platforms like LinkedIn, and Facebook. Every day, we see it. We like those shares and congratulate them. Many do online courses, certificate courses, and share their certificate on LinkedIn. This simple act motivates professionals to participate in more courses and gather more certificates. Which in turn enhances individuals learning a new skill or betterment of the existing skills. The same thing applies to issuing performance report cards to shop floor workers.

Here is an example of an employee’s performance report card. This one is prepared for stitching operators for the Monthly report card.
Employee report card garment operator

You can design your own employee report cards using the above template. You can show more information in this report card that you think would be good to have.

Monthly report card Data set (Month of April 2021)
Employee performance report card monthly

Yearly report card dataset (The year 2020)
Employee performance report card yearly

Note: You can also add details of sewing machines handled by the operator, names of apparel brands she worked with during the year.

Conclusion:

Many operators will love working in a company from where they can expect a certificate of their achievements. Getting a performance report card (certificate) is one kind of recognition for an employee from the company’s management. When they get a report card monthly or annually, it will be another motivating factor for doing a better job and targeting a new goal.

The question is how to make this report card.

Capturing data manually and making reports for each employee will be a difficult job. If this report can be generated by a single click I think many factories will agree in giving employee report cards to their employees.

You need a system that captures shop floor data and generates this kind of employee report card.

I would say you can try this and see the result. You will have less employee turnover. You will have less absenteeism on the shop floor.
