Cotton farming and exporting cotton fibers and cotton-made clothes are the main source of the economy for some countries in the world. 1. China

Cotton is produced most extensively in China. Cotton can be grown there on a huge scale because of its favorable environment and worst agricultural practices. For more than four decades China has been the world's largest producer of cotton.

China grows more cotton than it consumes. Since 2011-2012, China's share in the global cotton harvest is 28%; India, the second largest producer produces 24%, while the U.S. which is the third largest producer produces 13%. If the mill use is considered, the amount of raw fiber spun into yarn, one can see that China has 35% of the world's total mill used.


2. India

The second largest cotton grower in the world is India. India is renowned for producing high-quality cotton and has their long-story AB cotton production. India has a wide variety of cotton varietals.

India got 1st place in the world in cotton acreage with 120.69 Lakh Hectares area under cotton cultivation i.e., around 36% of the world's area of 333 Lakh Hectares.

Around 67% of India’s cotton is grown in rain-fed areas and 33% in irrigated areas. In terms of productivity, India is in the 38th rank with a yield of 510 kg/ha.


3. United States

The United States produces a significant amount of cotton, especially in the state like Texas California, and Georgia. To attain a high yield and produce cotton of the highest quality, the nation makes use of modern technology and sophisticated farming methods.

Increasing the amount of organic matter by 30%, increasing land use efficiency by 13%, decreasing greenhouse gas emission by 39%, decreasing soil loss acre by 50%, decreasing water use by 18%, and also minimizing energy use by 15% are the ways to increase cotton production in the country.


4. Brazil

Brazil is one of the world's top reserve cotton because of its extensive agriculture and statutory and hospitable climate. Brazilian cotton is renowned for having long high-quality staples. Brazil is one of the world’s leading cotton producers and an important competitor of the United States in the Asian and European cotton markets.

This situation has come about as a result of trade liberalization, structural transformation of the Brazilian economy, and the emergence of new cotton-producing regions using advanced technologies and benefiting from targeted government support.
 

5. Pakistan

Due to its long history of cotton growing Pakistan is a big producer of cotton. The nation's cotton business provides employment for sizeable numbers of farmers and is essential to its textile industry. Pakistan's share in the world cotton production in 2019-20 was 6.0 percent. Pakistan is 3rd largest consumer of cotton in the world and the 3rd largest yarn producer.


6. Uzbekistan

The largest producer of cotton in Central Asia is Uzbekistan. A strong cotton industry has grown up in the nation, which has ideal climate conditions for cotton farming. As a major component of Uzbekistan's agricultural exports, cotton is important to the country's economy.
 

7. Turkey

Turkey is one of the world's top reserves of cotton. And as a well-established cotton industry. Turkish cotton is prized by textile manufacturers for its high quality. Turkey’s cotton production in marketing year (MY) 2022/23 is forecast to increase to 925,000 metric tons (MT) (4.2 million bales) based on the assumption that farmers will plant more cotton in response to strong cotton prices.
 

8. Australia

Australia is a major producer of cotton, especially in states like New South Wales and Queensland. To produce premium cotton the nation makes use of advanced irrigation technology and forming practices. Australian cotton is renowned for its purity and minimal use of pesticides. 

Cotton production in Australia is primed to set a new record of 6 million bales in MY 2022/23, after a bumper harvest estimate of 5.5 million bales in MY 2021/22. This forecast is due to the strong prospect of increased irrigation water availability at the start of planting in October 2022 along with current high cotton prices and strong futures prices.
 

9. Turkmenistan

In Central Asia, Turkmenistan produces or substantial amount of cotton. The nation has a long history of cotton farming, and its cotton sector helps to boast agricultural exports.


10. Greece

Greece is renowned for producing high-quality cotton. Especially in the areas like Thessaly and Macedonia. Guddi cotton is recognized for being both resilient and soft. The cotton industry is crucial to its agriculture sector and helps with textile production.
