Background

The textile and apparel industry is one of the largest and most dynamic sectors in the global economy. These sectors play a vital role in employment, trade, and cultural expression. However, it is also among the most resource-intensive industries, contributing significantly to environmental challenges. From water-intensive cotton cultivation to the heavy reliance on synthetic fibers derived from fossil fuels, the industry's production processes have long raised concerns about sustainability.

The urgency to address these environmental issues has intensified in recent years due to growing awareness of climate change, resource depletion, and waste management concerns. According to the World Bank, the fashion industry is responsible for approximately 10% of global carbon emissions and consumes around 79 billion cubic meters of water annually. Additionally, textile waste remains a critical issue, with an estimated 92 million tons of discarded clothing and fabric ending up in landfills or incinerators each year. These alarming statistics underscore the need for more sustainable practices within the industry.
