The INDIAsize charts are now available, marking a significant milestone toward standardized sizing for Indian consumers. Conceptualized by the Ministry of Textiles (MoT), implemented by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) H.O, and supported by the Clothing Manufacturing Association of India (CMAI), this initiative commenced in late 2017. Over the past six years, extensive research, data collection, and analysis have been conducted to establish a scientifically validated size standard that reflects the diversity of India's population.
With the participation of over 26,000 individuals, body measurement data was meticulously collected from 22 locations across six major cities, ensuring a truly pan-India representation across age groups, regions, income levels, and communities. Following an extensive statistical analysis, the study culminated in the creation of 27 body size charts (13 for women and 14 for men), accounting for three height groups and five body shapes—capturing the true diversity of Indian body types.
It is important to highlight that years of rigorous research have now seen the light of day, with the most populous category of the INDIAsize charts available for free download at www.indiasize.in as part of the INDIAsize Excerpts. Kindly register for the same. The remaining charts are set to be released in due course, equipping brands and designers with data-driven insights to redefine garment sizing and fit, addressing the long-awaited needs of the Indian market.
It is worth emphasizing that the adoption of INDIAsize will enable the industry to design garments that truly reflect Indian body shapes, enhancing both fit and customer satisfaction. Furthermore, the IN Tag—India’s unique sizing identifier—will strengthen the country’s footprint in the global fashion and retail market, reinforcing its position as a key player in the industry.
Therefore, we invite the industry, eager for these findings, to embrace the INDIAsize dataset and integrate the IN Tag into the garments manufactured by their companies, setting a new benchmark for sizing and fit in the Indian context.
