Textile Finishing: Classification of Fabric Finishes

In this post, you will learn different type of textile
finishes commonly used in the textile industry. Finishing processes are divided
into two classes.

1. Physical or Mechanical finishes
2. Chemical finishes

Under these two categories, different kind of treatment is
done. This post covers major textile finishing processes.

Physical or mechanical finishes

These types of finishing treatments include

• Calendering
• Sanforising
• Raising
• Compating
• Napping
• Shearing
• Sueding
• Setting and heat-setting

All these treatments will be further explained in the next
post.

Chemical Finishes:

Chemical finishes are of two types-

1. Finishes obtained by deposition of chemicals such as starch
   china clay, oil, fats and waxes, synthetic resins, rubber latex, cellulose acetate,
   cellulose ethers, optical bleaching agents and so on.
2. Finishes obtained by chemical reactions with fibre. These
   includes-

• Parchmentising
• Anti-soil
• Wrinkle free
• Anti-crease
• Wash & wear
• Durable press
• Flame retardant
• Fluorochemical
• Deodorant & Antimicrobial
• Ultraviolet
  Protection
• Enzymes washing
